Now, more than ever, public parks and greenspace are a cherished part of our Great Miami Riverway communities. During the pandemic shutdown this spring, park visitation increased by more than 500 percent in some places. While we couldn’t go out to shop at a store, eat inside a restaurant, or walk into a movie theater – we could still leave our homes to enjoy the out of doors and nature.
One of those special places is Tawawa Park in Sidney. Officially dedicated in 1956, the park features 220 acres for hiking, fishing, paddling, active sports like soccer and baseball, a water park, and play areas.
A highlight of the park is the historic covered bridge. Tawawa is very popular for family gatherings, picnics and cookouts. It is also a well-known destination for runners and walkers who use the paved and natural trails to exercise and enjoy nature at the same time.
Tawawa Park is also home to the infamous Big Rock.
Big Rock stretches 1200 cubic feet and weighs 103 tons. It is one of the most unique geologic formations in the Ohio. According to geologist Albert Dickas, the twelve-foot high granite boulder landed in what-is-now Sidney about 15,000 years ago. It was carried by glacial ice from its origins in Canada. Dickas included Big Rock as an entry in his 2012 book, 101 Geologic Sites You’ve Gotta See.
Big Rock is popular for selfies, family photos, and has set the scene for quite a few marriage proposals. It also has a very special carving.
“A group of stonecutters, who were working on the construction of Sidney’s downtown Monumental Building in 1876, etched a carving of the US Shield, along with each of their names”.” says Duane Gaier, Chairperson of the Great Miami Riverway Coalition, and Parks Director for the City of Sidney. You can still see that etching, but you have to climb all the way to the top of the rock to take a look.
