I Am the Riverway: Toni & Rafael Salem

Before Pour House had a name, Toni and Rafael Salem were already pouring into Hamilton.

Both were born at Fort Hamilton, and raised by families who ran their own small businesses. She was a Hamilton girl; he was a Fairfield boy. They grew up in the same graduating class and connected through mutual friends. The rest, as they say, is history.

That shared-roots story matters, because when the couple opened Pour House in downtown Hamilton, it wasn't a business calculation. It was a homecoming.

Rafael is a general contractor specializing in plumbing, running AA Plumbing. Toni spent over fifteen years as an account executive for a security company,  and as it turns out, the same technology she specialized in is what powers Pour House's self-pour wall. When they launched fresh out of COVID, the timing felt right. "The community was thriving and ready to move on with life and continue with growth," Toni says. "We wanted to be a part of the resurgence."

Running two businesses as a married couple? They don't sugarcoat it. "Definitely isn't easy," Toni admits. Their approach is straightforward: they each own their role, and they check in with each other when it counts.

Ask the Salems what excites them most about Hamilton today, and the answer isn't about buildings or investment numbers. It's about people. "The sense of community has grown tremendously," they say. "We love watching more and more people join the growth, whether it's the public actually supporting the businesses or more businesses opening up. It's nice when a city can offer almost anything you need."

And the river? It's personal. Toni's eyes light up when she recalls fishing with her dad by the "new dam" in his two-man fishing boat- a memory that took an unexpected turn when they hit a rock and she went flying into the water. "I unfortunately swallowed some water," she laughs. Seeing people return to the riverfront now hits differently when you carry memories like that. "It gives us a sense of pride in our city and all that it has and can do."

When they look ten years out, the Salems dream big but grounded: More residents, especially those who left when times were tough, finding their way back. A Hamilton that's safe, stable, and thriving. "A place where the American dream can be accomplished," they say. "A model template for nearby cities to look up to."

And if you've never been to Hamilton? Toni doesn't hesitate to give a recommendation: "Pour House, of course! And then the Pour House Pedal." Once you're there, order the Pour House Punch. It's become a phenomenon, with the team constantly batching new kegs to keep up with demand. The recipe? Don't bother asking. That's a secret.

That same pride of place is exactly why Toni and Rafael are hosting and sponsoring the 2026 Great Miami Riverway Summit reception at Pour House on April 24th- not for the publicity, but because showing up for their community is just what the Salems do. It's who they've always been: two Hamilton kids, still building something worth coming home to.

We hope you'll join us. And if you see Toni and Rafael behind the bar, be sure to thank them… and maybe try that Punch.
