National BBQ Month done “Wright”

You may have heard, but we have a pretty outstanding reputation for aviation here in the Great Miami Riverway. It all started back in 1903 when Wilbur and Orville Wright achieved the first powered, sustained, and controlled airplane flight.

We are fortunate to have the National Aviation Heritage Area with a variety of museums from the Wright brothers’ original bicycle shop to the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Seen all together, you will experience aviation’s humble beginnings onward to the explorations of space.

Did you know that the parachute was invented here?

What you may not have heard, however, is that barbeque has been part of American culture since our colonial days. George Washington first attended a barbeque in Alexandria, Virginia in 1769, and we’d like to think that our aviation forefathers enjoyed a good mesquite smoke every once in a while as well.

How did we combine National BBQ Month (May) with the Wright brothers?

Now located across the street from the National Aviation Heritage Area, the Texas Beef and Cattle Company in the Wright Dunbar District of Dayton, OH has been serving up their famous brisket, tater salad, and jars of banana pudding since 1998.

Summer Hours: Thursdays 11-9pm, Fridays and Saturdays 11-10pm, Sundays 10-1pm brunch and 1-5pm regular menu

To celebrate both National Bike Month and National BBQ Month, take a Sunday ride for their Breakfast Taco Brunch. Potato, egg, cheese, and brisket tacos with sides of Texas Taters, Texas Rice, and refried beans will fuel you up for your ride back home. A meat taco, two sides, and coffee will cost you $14.

Interested in riding your bike or walking from the trail? Take the Great Miami River Recreation Trail to the Wolf Creek Trail and exit at N. Broadway St. It’s only a few blocks of residential before you arrive at the Texas Beef and Cattle Company and the National Aviation Heritage Area.
