3 things to know before you paddle the Great Miami River

Spring weather has FINALLY arrived! You are probably thinking about getting outside to launch your kayak or canoe in the beautiful Great Miami River.  We are all a little stir crazy and anxious to get outside more. And paddling can be an activity where you can still maintain a safe social distance whether you are in your own boat, or with your family.

The National Safe Boating Council has recommendations for social distancing on the water

Stay Safe

Anytime we talk about river adventures, we need to talk about river safety. A few small steps can ensure your next experience on the Great Miami River—or any river for that matter—is a fun and safe one. Here are three important things to do before you get in your kayak.

  1. Know the water. Do not enter the water when river levels are higher or water is moving faster. Most people underestimate the power of water. Check river conditions.
  2. Wear it! Always wear a life jacket while paddling.
  3. File a float plan. Let someone know where you are going, and when you are expected to return.

Safe Boating Week May 16 - 22

No matter where you go, or what you are paddling – Wear your life jacket! According to the U.S. Coast Guard:

  • 80 percent of all boating deaths are due to drowning
  • 83 percent of drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket
  • Two-thirds of drowning victims were good swimmers
